Chairman’s Message▷ renew

The Japanese Society for Alternatives to Animal Experiments (JSAAE) is an association of scientific professionals dedicated to promoting research, development, education, and public awareness of the Three Rs as an internationally accepted guideline for the proper use of animals in scientific testing. The term Three Rs refers to:

Replacement: using non-animal methods whenever possible.
Reduction: obtaining comparable levels of information from fewer animals.
Refinement: adopting methods for alleviating potential pain, suffering, or distress.

The Three Rs have recently figured prominently in the drafting of legislation and government policy related to the welfare of animals used in scientific research and have also been incorporated into a number of international standards and policies. The most notable example of this was the March 2013 EU directive prohibiting the use of animal testing in the development of cosmetics, which has had a worldwide impact. Legislature such as Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) in Europe and the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) in the U.S. clearly stipulate the use of alternatives to animal testing and leaves no option but to conduct chemical testing using methods that do not require the use of animals. Moreover, methods based on the Three Rs for the testing of pharmaceutical products, medical devices, and pesticides are now being reconsidered worldwide, as we enter an age in which there is increasing demand for research and development of not just cosmetics but all products requiring safety assessment to be conducted in the spirit of the Three Rs.

This is the situation we face as the JSAAE approaches the 30th anniversary of its founding.

I am pleased to announce that the 30th annual meeting of JSAAE will be held from November 23 to 25, 2017 in Tokyo, Japan.

The theme of this meeting is “Regulatory Science and the Three Rs.” We are now working in collaboration with affiliated organizations to plan a series of symposiums and panel discussions for the meeting, which we hope will serve as an opportunity for researchers from the private, public, and academic sectors to gather together and to discuss in earnest practical concerns related to the Three Rs. We are all well aware of the importance of basic research into these practical concerns, and to promote discussion of general issues during the meeting, we will ask everyone to vote for the best poster presentation. The top vote getters will be given the opportunity to give oral presentations, in order to stimulate ideas for further research in these fields.

We hope that everyone who attends the meeting will participate actively in these events.

Chairman of the 30th Annual Meeting of JSAAE
Hajime Kojima, Ph.D.
